Pattern
We are pattern-seeking critters. This series explores the power of that instinct. To assemble each piece, I create an overall design and then choose between two and ten related images. Sometimes, I digitally slice the images into strips. I then use various arbitrary rules or forms of chance–a random number generator, dice, etc–to decide the order and arrangement of the individual images or strips. (Yes, I’m a total fan of John Cage.) Remarkably, this “letting-go” invariably produces happy results. In part, that’s because our brains are wired to seek the satisfaction of a pattern when confronted with random visual info. And the process is also a reminder of how little control we really have–and when we trust and accept that, we are rewarded with delight.
